The Vikings needed to find help at the wide receiver position at some point of the 2021 NFL Draft. Although they waited until the fifth-round to select the first player at the position, it seems as if they found a steal.
Former Iowa WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette is an absolute playmaker. He plays fast and has the ability to make an impact as a return man early on in his career.
It’s likely that the Vikings ease Smith-Marsette into the offense, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he won the WR3 spot by the end of training camp. Stefon Diggs was once a fifth-round pick for the Vikings in 2015, so maybe this is the sweet spot of taking wide receivers for Rick Spielman and company.
There were several other picks made by the Vikings that could have been used at the receiver position, but they ended up finding a player that shouldn’t have been available that late on day three.
Here’s a highlight reel of some of Smith-Marsette’s best plays as an Iowa Hawkeye.
